Driving Tips

With a little preparation and planning, the scenic drive to Stanford Sierra Conference Center on Fallen Leaf Lake can be an enjoyable start to your trip.  Before you hop in the car, check your vehicle to make sure it’s ready for the drive with all maintenance up to date and fluids filled.  Print out necessary maps and research South Lake Tahoe weather conditions.  Particularly in the early spring and late fall, if the forecast calls for inclement weather, check CA road conditions by calling 800 GAS-ROAD or visit http://www.dot.ca.gov.  For Nevada road conditions visit nevadadot.com/ or call 511 from within the state of Nevada and from out of state call 877-NV-ROADS (877-687-6237).

As you start your drive make sure you have drinking water for the dry conditions at higher altitude.  From California or Nevada there are plenty of good locations to stop for a break.  If you’re driving from the Sacramento area, plan a stop at the Fresh Pond Trading Post/ Chevron Station.  The trading post sells a wide variety of snacks and fun, Western-themed items and has clean restrooms. From Nevada, there are a number of restaurants along highway 395 through Carson City including Reds Old 395 Grill for an authentic old West atmosphere.

Through the mountains enjoy the scenery, and remain aware of the road, other motorists and driving conditions.  For the ups and downs, downshift your car and maintain a consistent speed.  For more helpful mountain driving tips visit http://www.roadtripamerica.com/tips/mountaindriving.htm.

After you turn onto Fallen Leaf Road, drive slowly as you wind your way past beautiful pine and aspen filled woods and meadows into our small, mountain lake community. Watch for pull out spots to let oncoming cars pass on the narrow road.  Turn right when you see the Fallen Leaf Fire station and cross the small bridge, then you have arrived at Stanford Sierra Conference Center.  Park on the uphill side of the lodge and come in to the front desk where our friendly staff will direct you to your cabin and the parking lot.  Enjoy your stay at our comfortable lakefront California retreat center!
