How will I get there?
If you are driving to Camp: our physical address is 130 Fallen Leaf Road, Fallen Leaf, CA 96151. You can Google Map it here. The last 4 miles to camp are on a narrow road not much wider than one lane with many blind corners and local traffic that sometimes moves faster than it should. Five miles per hour, literally, is a safe speed when approaching those blind curves!
If you fly into the Reno Airport: Take the South Tahoe Airporter from the Reno Airport (in the baggage claim area) to Golden Nugget Casino. Important: Let us know what shuttle you are on and we will meet you at the Golden Nugget Casino in South Lake Tahoe and bring you to Camp.
If you take the train or bus: We will gladly pick you up at the Amtrak connecting bus station (at the “Y” in South Lake Tahoe). Greyhound no longer services the South Lake Tahoe region. The nearest and most convenient connection via Greyhound is to travel to Reno, NV and take a cab to the airport, where you can connect via the South Tahoe Express shuttle (see note above). For schedule information call Greyhound at 800-231-2222 or check online at www.greyhound.com, or Amtrak at 800-872-7245 or online at www.amtrak.com.
What is housing like?
Staffers are housed in rustic cabins. Some of the cabins have their own bathroom; however, most cabins have a shared bathroom, either attached or nearby. Each cabin is furnished with a dresser and a twin bed for each staffer. Camp will provide pillows, sheets and blankets if you need them, as well as toilet paper, tissues and cleaning supplies.
We have towels that you can use, but we highly recommend that you bring your own. Keep in mind that our rustic cabins are small and that you will have a roommate. As you think about what items to bring, please bring your most useful possessions: a positive attitude, a solid work ethic and a commitment to forming a community based on professional service and mutual respect.
What should I bring?
Identification documents: in order to confirm your eligibility for employment, we will need to see EITHER a valid driver’s license AND your original social security card OR a valid passport (or other photo ID that confirms American citizenship and eligibility to work). If you have any interest in working any of the vehicular shifts (Town Run or Airport Run), you must bring a valid driver’s license. We will make photocopies when necessary on the day of your arrival.
Toiletries: shampoo, soap, razor, toothpaste/toothbrush, etc
At least three sets of nice clothes that are appropriate for shifts that include interaction with guests. Such shifts include Dining Room, Office, Airport Run, Social Hours, Fountain (our small store), Coffee Breaks and Wine. “Nice clothes” includes collared shirts, non-denim pants or shorts, skirts or the equivalent. We will have more formal groups, a collared black or white shirt is recommended. If you are working in the dining room, you will also need at least one pair of black pants, a plain white dress shirt and black shoes.
If you are a kitchen staffer, you will not need the above items. You will, however, need to bring comfortable closed-toed shoes and sleeved shirts (i.e. no tank tops) to wear in the kitchen.
Clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. You will be doing a fair amount of dirty work, so please bring appropriate clothing. You might also bring a pair of shoes to sacrifice to the wet world of hobart (AKA dish washing).
Cold/cool/wet weather clothes. The weather changes very quickly here at 6377 ft. Between your arrival and departure you will experience multiple seasons in two months time including SNOW. In the spring, much time is devoted to shoveling and opening camp from its long winter slumber but, by June, it is summer and sunny. As for the fall, it starts out with 70-90 degree weather but will most likely turn into a beautiful winter wonderland before you leave, so please come expecting all kinds of weather. We recommend bringing a winter hat, gloves, and a rain jacket.
Comfortable closed-toed shoes that are suitable for Dining Room service. Closed-toed shoes for work that is outside. The terrain around Camp is fairly rugged. You will do a lot of walking on non-paved surfaces. Please be prepared.
Recreational equipment. We can lend you tennis rackets, volleyballs, basketballs, backpacks, sleeping pads etc., but feel free to bring your own if you have them. Mountain bikes, hiking shoes, backpacking gear, climbing gear, swimming suit and other outdoor “necessities” are highly recommended. Music, books, instruments, etc. will also be useful in your free time.
A battery-powered waking-up device (i.e. cell phone, alarm clock, watch). Don’t worry, our cabins have electricity, BUT we have occasional power outages. We expect staff to arrive on time to their shifts regardless of electrical difficulties.
There is a laundry facility available to staff which is free of charge.
How can my loved ones reach me?
Though we live in the woods, we are not entirely removed from modern technology. Generally speaking, all staff and guest housing have a great wi-fi signal. Our staff lounge ( the Slounge, as it’s affectionately known) has several computers with internet access. In addition to communication via phone lines and internet, we are still highly dependent on the U.S. Postal Service. You can receive mail at the following two addresses:
Our mailing address for USPS letters and packages is:
